Making International Travel Arrangements
Most international students travel to Iowa City by air. The Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids (code CID), which is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from campus, is the nearest airport with commercial airline service.
Other airports in Iowa and major airports in cities such as Chicago and Minneapolis do not direct ground transportation to Iowa City, and you will find connections to intercity bus services difficult and often expensive.
The University of Iowa will provide a bus for newly arriving international students on August 14-16, 2014. A schedule of bus departure times and drop-off locations in Iowa City will be available on your Pre-Arrival Checklist in the iHawk system, please check there for additional details. Students arriving on dates when a bus is not available are strongly encouraged to use one of the airport shuttle services (about $38-$50, with a tip of a few dollars for the driver optional). We discourage new students from accepting rides from other students or community members.
- Airport Shuttle Service—This service requires a reservation at least 24 hours before your arrival. It is located in the airport terminal near baggage claim and remains open until all scheduled flights have arrived. Reserve online or call 1-319-365-0655 or 1-800-725-8460.
- Express Limousines—This service requires making a reservation at least 48 hours before your arrival. You will need to provide your flight number, airline, and the flight's arrival date and time. Call 1-319-358-8000 or 1-800-383-2219.
Temporary housing upon arrival in Iowa City
Review the hotel and other options for Temporary Housing Upon Arrival in Iowa City. A list of hotels in the area can be found at the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Some local hotels offer Special Hotel Rates for UI Visitors (though these rates are not available for football or graduation weekends). Please note when making your hotel reservations, it is best to make the reservation directly with the hotel and not use a third party booking site. Some hotels require patrons to be 21 years or older to book or stay, so be sure to inquire about any age requirements at the time of booking. Additionally, many hotels require a valid credit card or a $200 deposit prior to checking in.
Traveler's health insurance
Your university health insurance policy will go into effect the first day of the month in which your classes start. If you plan to arrive in the United States before that date, consider purchasing traveler's health insurance to cover medical expenses incurred during the interim.
